About Us

“Bharat Ratna Dr B.R. Ambedkar Legal Research Centre” was established by Siddharth College of Law under the guidance and vision of the then Principal Dr Arunachalam Chettiar. The innovative dream of establishing the research foundation emerged into reality on 6th March 2010. The Centre had been inaugurated by the luminaries of the legal field, Hon’ble Justice Dr Dhananjay Chandrachud (Judge, Supreme Court of India) and Hon’ble Justice Shri. Abhay S. Oka (Judge, Supreme Court of India).
ALRC had conducted an “Orientation Programme for Legal Research” on 5th February 2011, which had been graced by many eminent personalities in the Law field like Mr. Singaravel (Member State Human Rights Commission), Mr. P.S.N Prasad (Joint Legal Advisor RBI), Dr. Bindu Variath (Principal K.C. College), Dr. Anil G. Varaith (Director. Bharat Ratna Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Legal Research Centre), Mr. Bohra, (Law officer RBI), Dr. Ravishankar, (HUDCO), Prof. T.M. Jethnani (Principal Law College); who gave motivation and inspiration to the students for their right approach in the field of Law through research work.
To facilitate research and guide students, the Research Centre initiated various projects. A visit to Alibaug Prison was arranged on 22nd January 2011 to help students learn how to conduct a field survey for Research. An educational trip to Delhi was arranged from 21st to 26th February 2011. Students were given an opportunity to visit the legal institutions of The Supreme Court of India, the Parliament of India, and the National Human Rights Commission. Furthermore, they were also given the opportunity to interact with dignitaries like Mr. Rahul Gandhi, Mr. Sharad Pawar, Mr. Sushil Kumar Shinde, Supreme Court Justice Mr. Singhi, Ex-Chief Justice of India Mr. Balkrishnan.
The members of the Research Centre have also published and presented various research papers on various distinguished podiums.

AIMS AND OBJECTS OF THE RESEARCH CENTRE

The Aims and objectives of the research Centre were developed and curated by Hon’ble Mr. N. R. Madhava Menon, the father of modern legal education in India.

The Centre will have the following aims and objectives
a) To be dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in teaching and research in all branches of law and related fields at the frontiers of knowledge.
b) To impart high-quality education and training involving undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in legal studies at par with National Law Universities, IITs and IIMs, through flexible and seamless curricula by adapting to the best global practices in this regard. It will allow the Centre to carry out the state-of-art research and development work in the chosen fields and generate trained manpower of very high quality. The chosen fields of study and research will also include branches of law relevant to the aims and objectives of the Government, the industry, the profession and academic institutions.
c) To encourage trans-disciplinary and interdisciplinary research on complex social, ethical, political and philosophical dimensions of human rights.
d) To promote innovative research on the role of law in a legally plural world.
e) To proactively forge and evolve strong symbiotic relationships with colleges, universities, research agencies, industries, and research and development institutions in India and abroad, with a view to network and complement infrastructural facilities and human resources, it will have a role in nurturing young researchers, particularly showing exceptional talent through internships, clerkships and scholarships.
f) To disseminate legal knowledge at the mass level through academic and research activities.
g) To generate, protect and exploit significant intellectual properties through its core and sponsored research programmes in various branches of law, including Human Rights and Humanitarian Law.
h) To impart a forum for the exchange of ideas through scholarly publications, conferences, seminars and workshops.
i) To contribute to the empowerment of weaker sections of the society by taking legal aid to their doorstep.
j) To promote studies of socio-legal issues confronting backward sections of the society and rehabilitation of offenders into the mainstream,
k) To become an autonomous Centre and set up campuses in pursuance to the above objectives, anywhere in India.
l) To do all such things as are incidental, necessary or conducive to the attainment of any or all of the objectives of the Centre to ensure its growth.

 

REVITALIZATION OF THE RESEARCH CENTRE

Bharat Ratna Dr B.R. Ambedkar Legal Research Centre was revitalized in 2021 by Ms V. Mangala and Mr. Eshan Borikar under the guidance of Ms. Sandhya Dokhe (I/C Principal of Siddharth College of Law), Dr. Arunachalam Chettiar and Prof Ashana Mishra. The revitalization of the Research Centre has been initiated with the vision of taking the Research Centre to legendary heights. The Centre is in the process of establishing a full-fledged research space for students and legal professionals to conduct research that would be of practical value. The Centre would facilitate various research projects to bring the research level at par with international standards. Following the footsteps of our Father of Law, Dr B.R. Ambedkar of Law, who pursued social justice, the Research Centre would strive to undertake projects that are of socio-legal significance and conduct research to tackle the contemporary
problems that persist in society. The Centre would encourage research upon work that empowers the weaker sections of the society to bring them at par with the others. The Centre shall conduct research that identifies the lacunae in the existing law. The Centre shall adopt a wide range of research methodologies, including comparative, critical, analytical, doctrinal, exploratory and empirical research to facilitate the research projects undertaken by the Centre.
The Centre shall conduct various guest lectures by eminent personalities in the legal field to develop knowledge, critical thinking and researcher’s mind in all those who work for and under the Centre. Certain sessions shall also be made available to the public for them to benefit from the invaluable knowledge and experience of the eminent personalities.
The Centre shall publish journals and magazines to facilitate research and to impart knowledge to all. The journals shall contain articles and research papers on contemporary legal and socio-legal issues, judgment analysis and opinions on legal points on various branches of law.

VISION STATEMENT

Bharat Ratna Dr B.R. Ambedkar Legal Research Centre (ALRC) has been established with the vision of promoting innovative and qualitative research that is productive to the Government, the Industry, the Profession, Academic Institutions and Society. Furthermore, the Research Centre shall undertake projects keeping human rights and humanitarian values in mind. The actions of the Research Centre are aligned with its objective of contributing to the empowerment of weaker sections of the society and promoting studies of socio-legal issues confronting backward sections of the community.
